The company was originally founded in 1968 by Richard 'Dick' Nelson as Walnut Sand and Gravel, operating gravel pits in Bureau, Putnam, and Marshall Counties in Illinois. In 1992, Tri-Con Materials was formed as a union company with partners Steve Nelson and Steve Harmon, based in Serena, LaSalle County.

In 1997, Tri-Con Materials merged with Walnut Sand and Gravel to become the operating entity it is today. The company's main operations are now based at their Hennepin location, which is their largest active gravel pit situated on the Illinois River. Tri-Con Materials has built a reputation for providing high-quality aggregate materials for various applications such as asphalt, concrete, and base materials.
